Black and white close-up portrait of an elderly woman - my mother ❤️ wearing a wide-brimmed striped sun hat, smiling warmly at the camera, photographed outdoors in the Harz region of Germany.
Harz, Germany, 28 May 2023. My mother’s smile, on one of her last good days. I photographed it because I knew it would not always be there.

Iran, January 2025. My mother and my brother at my father’s grave. Sixty-one years of marriage. She did not quite understand yet that he was gone.
Black and white photograph of two teenage boys peering over a concrete wall in Yerevan, Armenia, smiling toward the camera, with a tall Soviet-era monument rising out of focus into a pale winter sky behind them.
Yerevan, Armenia, March 2022. They called out to me from a distance. They wanted to be photographed. It was the most straightforward request of the day.
Studio portrait of a young woman with light brown wavy hair, half her face hidden behind a white panel, one blue eye looking directly into the camera with a calm, slightly guarded expression.
Studio, Denmark, 2021. Half hidden, half present. She decided how much to show — and that was exactly right.
Black and white photograph of a man sitting hunched in a doorway on a street near the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad, Iran, knees drawn to his chest, eyes downcast, appearing isolated despite the busy surroundings.
Mashhad, Iran, 2025. A few metres from one of the holiest sites in the Islamic world. He sat there as if he had become invisible.
Black and white photograph of a woman in a full black chador seated on a pavement in Mashhad, Iran, her expression heavy and guarded, a large poster of a sailing ship in stormy seas visible on the wall behind her.
Mashhad, Iran, April 2025. She sat on the pavement in the old quarter, hands folded, expression unreadable. Behind her, a ship battled a storm. She did not seem to notice.
A red-haired woman in a crimson dress operates a bread-slicing machine at a market stall in Yerevan, Armenia, surrounded by other vendors and warm backlit light through large industrial windows.
Yerevan, Armenia, July 2025. A quiet market on a slow summer day. She stood out — the red dress, the red hair, the unhurried precision of her work.
Close-up black and white portrait of an elderly Iranian man with a thick white moustache and beard, seated outside a shop in the historic bazaar of Nishapur, Iran, his expression quiet and contemplative.
Nishapur, Iran, 29 May 2025. He sat outside a shop in the old bazaar as if he had always been there. I asked twice. He nodded once.
Black and white photograph of a young boy crouching on cobblestones in Kathmandu, Nepal, absorbed in repairing a small kite with a wooden spool of thread, surrounded by the blur of a busy public square.
Kathmandu, Nepal, October 2022. He was somewhere else entirely — until he wasn’t. Then he looked up, caught my smile, looked away again, and went back to his kite.
Black and white photograph of two exhausted male workers crouching in the ruins of an old building in Mashhad, Iran, brewing tea on a makeshift stove among rubble and dust in the summer heat.
Mashhad, Iran, May 2025. The old quarter. Two men, a fire, and water coming slowly to the boil. Everything else could wait.
Black and white photograph of an elderly man with long white hair sitting alone at an outdoor café table in Füssen, Germany, bent in deep concentration over a chess board, hand pressed to his face.

Kathmandu, Nepal, 24 September 2022. Day one. My first eye contact with poverty in Nepal. I did not look away.
